The Don't Trade Reyes movement went national last night! Here's the story:
I made the sign for the official "Don't Trade Reyes" event that was posted on Facebook by a few of the fans. That was on Friday night and I brought the EXACT same sign. On Friday it wasn't a problem and they even talked about it and showed it multiple times on SNY.
I decided since I was going to the game last night I may as well bring the sign with me again. I stood outside before the game with the sign opened at my legs. Out of the thousand or so people who walked by me 99% of them had a positive reaction. "I agree" was the most common response.
I started the game off on the "Shea Bridge" and decided to go down to my seat in the 4th inning for Jose's at bat. The fans around me saw the sign and were pumped up on the message. We all want Reyes on this team. When he walked to the plate I told the fans around me that we would be chanting Don't Trade Reyes clap clap clap clap clap.... They were into it and it spread to the other side of the stadium in seconds. Now I completely understand that its obnoxious to sit behind someone holding a gigantic sign but it was up for about 20 seconds TOPS. It just ended up being at the right place at the right time and it luckily caught the attention of the ESPN cameras.
I was told by a security guard that I can't hold up the sign when the game is in play. I agreed. That makes complete sense. After he got a hit I put up the sign again and a supervisor then came down to tell me that I can't have the sign up because it has a website address on it. Ok... again, makes complete sense. I am getting free advertisement LIVE on national television. Makes sense.
I decided to leave the section on my own and walk back to my original spot. I agreed that I wouldn't show the sign anymore. They didn't kick me out right off the bat. I folded up my sign and while walking out (while fans booed of course.. they wanted me there) and people around asked how to contact me. I gave out about 10 business cards and that is what set off security even more. That is now soliciting I guess.
The guard asked to see my ticket. I did in fact have one for that section. He then confiscated the ticket and asked me to leave on my own or leave in cuffs. I asked on what charge and he said "now you are trespassing, you don't have a ticket". Real classy.
I've never been kicked out of any stadium before. At first I was pissed but in the end... it was worth it. Thanks guys! Media frenzy!
Either way the message was shown and it's making all sorts of press right now. Thanks for checking out my website and pick up your own Don't Trade Reyes shirt HERE.

Listen. I'm a Braves fan. Congratulations, you beat us in this series... We clearly don't have our heads on straight right now. ANYWAY, ANY intelligent Mets fan SHOULD WANT Reyes to be traded, for two or three reasons
ReplyDelete1. Do you really think you are going to contend this year? If not, and I sincerely hope you really don't think you guys have a chance to contend this year, why not trade him and get some pieces to build the future around? That makes all the sense in the world.
2. Reyes is a FREE AGENT at the end of the year. Meaning he can sign with who he damn well chooses whether you trade him or not. If you really think you can have him back, trade him now and try to re-acquire him this winter. You might even have one of those protected draft picks and luck out that way,.
3. The bottom line is I would guess Reyes wants to play for a winner. You don't have that in Queens. So he isn't going to re-sign. So, by all means, don't trade him, and make your franchise the worser by doing so.
The worser? Hey last time we had a free agent leave us your idiot GM resigned Tom Glavine and we ended up with Ike Davis. The worser? not really.
ReplyDeleteThe worser? Wow - thanks Cobb County schools... And way to go Braves - you lost to the freaking Buffalo Bisons two out of three this series - have you looked at our line up??
ReplyDeleteWe want to keep Jose because he's one of the few core players of this franchise, and we hope we can build around him. He's just coming into his prime, and we've got some really great young players that will just keep getting better (or betterer, in Atlanta-speak).
So take your corn cob pipe and go back to the country... Thanks...

ReplyDeleteand idc that he's the face of your franchise... the bottom line is he isn't going to want to reup with your team anyway so why not get something instead of nothing.
and even if you guys did take 2 of 3 from us, we still have a much better record than you
Wow, this guy is going to post the same comment on every single web site in the world - and be the first one to do it.
ReplyDeleteGET A LIFE
1) No team is going to trade away top prospects for a rental player. the Mets would never get value for Reyes. Two high end draft picks are probably the better gamble.
ReplyDelete2)That is a risky proposition
3)You know that? You know what Reyes and his agent and Sandy Alderson are all thinking? You can predict the future? Maybe Reyes wants to build a legacy with the team he came up with. Maybe he doesn't want to move his family. None of us know his priorities
Urban dictionary is your source? You mean THE same authority I use to learn about deviant sexual acts and Juggalos. Well, I can't argue with that. You clearly are a scholar, sir. Allow me to rebut your claims:
ReplyDelete1. If you pay ANY attention, you would realize considerable buzz is
Being heard about the fact that teams are being more and more reluctant to trade top prospects for rentals. The mets would not get a kings ransom for Reyes by any means, and dependent on their uture willingness to spend over slot, might be BETTER for the future with the picks than B prospects.
2.that's typical stupidity posited by people who have no idea how baseball works. When has it EVER happened?
3."I would guess" means your talking out of your ass. Jose has multiple times said he wants to finish his career as a met, he just wants to be paid what he is worth. I agree with him.
Darren:
ReplyDeleteThe problem I have with you getting ejected is as follows.
First, when you were on TV the first time it was on SNY. You did not shove your way in front of a camera, the SNY director chose to show your sign. SNY and the Mets are partners and if they do not want signs with advertising, then they should not have shown the sign on TV.
Last night, you were on ESPN and I am assuming ESPN could care less about the advertising. Assuming they do, the picture ESPN aired was, again, a choice by their director. It it too perfect for it to be a coincidence or an accident. They were talking about the Reyes trade the entire night and then they show a shot of you with Jose in the foreground.
The delay in TV is used to give the directors some time in choosing the shots they want to use. If either SNY or ESPN saw your sign and found it objectionable, they could have easily changed the shot to something else.
If the MLB, the Mets, SNY, or ESPN has a problem with the advertising then they should do a better job silencing you by...I don't know...telling their TV staff to stop showing you. The sign only works as advertising if people see it.
The Mets can barely keep people in the building as it is; they are not in a position to be ejecting die-hard fans who actually want to be there. Also, if the Mets really had a problem with what you are doing, then they should consider stopping you legally, through all the obvious copyright and trademark issues that your website raises. Hopefully, that that will not be the case.
Look you Atlanta Braves Wuss, from what I see you have only won 1 World Series under the Atlanta name . Yes we beat you 2 outta 3 games with practically A FARM TEAM. Why do you want us to trade Reyes ? So you can get him? Or to possibly a American League team soo you dont face him? You make me nauses do us a favor, go cry on your Chipper Jones poster .
ReplyDelete"we still have a much better record than you"
ReplyDeleteOh really? You think 3.5 games is "much better?" LOL. You are much "worser" than a Phillies fan, Mr. Lawson.
You apparently are so hurt by your team losing 2 of 3 to the Mets over the weekend that you feel the need to spend hours and dozens of posts on a Monday morning tolling numerous baseball and Mets sites and whining about Mets fans. Talk about low self-esteem! And your English is "worser" too! Get a life Mr. Lawson.
Like I said this morning on your Facebook page, I think the Mets made you into a martyr, at least in the sense of sending the message of not trading Reyes. The Mets were completely classless in how they handled sending you away from your seats at the end of the sign story. I realize you may have overstepped some line (and I think you saw that too), but confiscating your ticket...please! And please don't change your message and start attacking the Mets or stadium personnel with your signs and t-shirts.
ReplyDeleteLove it. From one blogger to another: YOU GO BOY!
ReplyDeleteThe Mets absolutely cannot trade Reyes!! For one, he is the most exciting player in baseball, hands down.. How often does one of those come around? Also, the team is having a hard enough time putting fans in the seats, soooo lets get rid of the best player and have Tejada start in place, please... Also, money cant be a huge issue, sure Wilpons portfolio is in shambles because of his own mismanagement, so it wouldnt be fair to destroy the team cause hes going broke.. he needs to sell the team.. After this year, some money will be freed up anyway... $17mil, Beltran, $12mil Olly Perez, $8mil Castillo.. so theres no reason why they couldnt make a reasonable offer to pay what he is worth..
ReplyDeleteHey Darren,
ReplyDeleteGood on you! I bet you're 7line from the NY Mets forum. Am I right?
At any rate, regards from Snortimer!
Let's keep Reyes.....and get back Keppinger!
All the best!
Timing is everything...you nailed it perfectly. Now if the Mets let Jose get away like they've done with other popular players over the years this will haunt them forever too. The sad part is he probably will go with the team that pays him the most...which is why as a diehard fan as I was...I lost interest in the big leagues and prefer the minor and independent ones much more.
